Ashley Westwood injury update with Nikola Vlasic in tears and consoled by West Ham teammates as Burnley star is stretched off and taken to hospital

Burnley star Ashley Westwood was stretched off from the London Stadium pitch and taken to hospital after suffering a nasty leg injury that may put him on the sidelines for some time.

Westwood was involved in a collision with West Ham midfielder Nikola Vlasic midway through the first-half of Sunday’s 1-1 Premier League draw, and there was immediate concern.

Vlasic was in tears and had to be consoled by his Hammers teammates, most notably captain Declan Rice, who quickly alerted medics to the midfielder’s injured leg.

Aaron Cresswell was also visibly upset as Westwood was attended to by the medical teams.

There was a long delay in play while the Burnley ace was put on a stretcher and given oxygen during nine minutes of treatment on the pitch.

He was given a round of applause by the crowd at the London Stadium as he was taken off the field.

The 32-year-old suffered a suspected dislocated and fractured ankle, and Burnley’s interim manager Mike Jackson – who is filling on after Sean Dyche’s surprise sacking – revealed after the match that Westwood was taken straight to hospital for further treatment.

Burnley also posted on Twitter on Sunday evening, saying he is ‘doing well’.

“He’s gone to hospital and we’re waiting for an update,” said Jackson. “We’re hoping he’s OK, our thoughts are with him.

“You could see it wasn’t good from the reaction of the players. He looked distraught, but fingers crossed, we hope it’s OK.

“When you see Declan Rice come over and say it’s not good, you know it’s not. The lad himself put his hand up, and he doesn’t usually go down.

“It could be the end of his season, but there is a squad here ready to play. Josh Brownhill came in and has done really well. They reacted well from that, they are a good group.”

Moments after Westwood was taken off, Burnley opened the scoring through striker Wout Weghorst.

The forward managed to bundle the ball into the back of the net and there were muted celebrations with the players still reeling from the injury to their teammate.

Burnley and England goalkeeper Nick Pope was also asked post-match about his teammate’s injury.

“Yeah, it’s obviously something myself and the boys and everyone at the club will be wishing him the best and we’ll speak to him in a couple of minutes,” he said.

“I’ve got no news on it but obviously sending my love to him.”

He continued: “Westy [Westwood] is a big part of how we play and a big character in the dressing room. Someone who’s been a top, top player for us over the years.

“So to see that happen to anyone isn’t great, but for it to happen to Ashley is probably extra difficult, so another good reason why it’s [today’s score] a good point.”
