West Ham boss David Moyes believes Declan Rice’s outburst of anger at the referee shows his players care.
Footage has emerged of West Ham midfielder accusing referee Jesus Gil of corruption after the Europa League semi-final defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt.
Rice was filmed approaching the official in the tunnel after the 1-0 defeat in the second leg ended the Hammers’ hopes of European glory.
“The club are aware of the video being shared on social media but will not comment further until the referee’s report has been reviewed,” a club statement read.
In footage obtained by Fox Sports Mexico, Rice yells at Gil, “It’s so bad, all night it’s so bad. How can you be so bad?
“Honestly, you probably got f****** paid. Damn corruption.
Trailing 2-1 since the first leg, West Ham’s task became more difficult when Aaron Cresswell was sent off for denying a scoring chance to Frankfurt striker Jens Petter Hauge in the 19th minute, before the goal from Rafael Santos Borre does not seal the fate of the Hammers.
Although there were few complaints about Cresswell’s sacking, Rice suggested ‘every decision’ went the way of the home side in a post-match interview – and now the midfielder risks a UEFA investigation after his behavior towards the referee in the tunnel was filmed.
Speaking to BT Sport after the match, Rice admitted Cresswell’s red card was not the source of his frustration.
“The ejection was probably an ejection, but some of the other decisions were poor tonight,” Rice said.
“The referee seemed to make all the decisions for them. When you have someone against you, there’s not much you can do.
Meanwhile, Hammers boss Moyes, who was also sent off for returning a ball to a ball boy, echoed Rice’s sentiments on the refereeing.
Asked about the decisions against West Ham on the night, the Scot replied: “Lots of complaints, yeah. Very disappointed. Things didn’t happen for us on the night. There were no small things, but I’m really proud of the players.
He added: “We enjoyed being in the competition. Not sure we enjoyed the refereeing. We have a pretty good team so I think we can try again. We’ll be a little wiser and hopefully we can do it more often.
On Rice’s video, he said: “It shows you how much all the players cared about.
“We all cared a lot last night. We felt like we were treated pretty badly overall and that’s what’s happening.
“If you know football, everyone is emotional, so unless you’re in the heat of the moment sometimes people don’t understand how it feels.
“Last night we had a group of players who were really connected, trying to win the game and feeling it was very difficult in a lot of different circumstances.”
