3 talking points as Rangers cling to league trophy with Dundee United walk on beach ball day at Ibrox

Rangers ensured they would retain the Scottish Premiership trophy for at least a few more days with a dominating win over Dundee United.

James Tavernier led his side to the trophy for the first time in a decade last season but will relinquish it in the next seven days.

But the skipper put Gers on their way to victory which will delay the inevitable with a penalty for their 17th of the season before substitute Amad Diallo secured victory with a second for the Europa League finalists .

Fans were in the festive mood with beach balls and sombreros after securing their place in Seville on May 18.

But while Europe was the highlight of the season, it was a domestic disappointment and any further wins against Euro-chasing Tangerines would have handed Celtic the title.

And at half-time, that’s how it goes since the Gers fail to find the breakthrough despite a dominant first 45 minutes.

It took a penalty to find a way to the stubborn Dundee United net, with Tavernier converting in the second half before Diallo added a second.

It was always going to be difficult for the Gersois after the peak of emotion on Thursday evening and the fact that they know the title is beyond them now.

But it also allowed Van Bronckhorst to rest some key men ahead of two cup finals that will make or destroy their season.

And he gave youngster Leon King the start with fringe man James Sands while Aaron Ramsey made his return from injury after fears his season was over last month.

The home side started on the front foot but Tangerines keeper Benjamin Siegrist – linked with a move to Ibrox – was in fine form.

And the United keeper brilliantly denied Scott Arfield, fresh off signing his new contract, after a neat one-two with Steven Davis as the former Canada captain looked certain to score.

Fashion Sakala then had a big chance on the half-hour mark after Connor Goldson picked him off with a long-range pass, but the Zambian fired just the wrong side of the post.

Ramsey then hit the post on the stroke of halftime after Scott Wright played it in – but the offside flag was up.

Rangers had all the play in the opening 45 minutes, but no goals were scored and Diallo was introduced in place of Wright at the break.

And the loanee Manchester United man created a good chance early in the second half, but after doing well to seize a shooting opportunity, he fired wide.

Siegrist impressed and made a fine save to deny Sakala but it was the keeper who was to blame as Gers eventually got the breakthrough.

Ramsey played a delicious ball over the United defense for Sakala and Siegrist came out and annihilated the striker.

Steven McLean had no choice but to point to the spot and stepped up Tavernier to return the opener from 12 yards.

The Light Blues continued to probe and Diallo had the ball in the bet, but again the offside flag was up.

Rangers then secured victory with just over 10 minutes on the clock.

Archie Meekison failed to control a pass from Charlie Mulgrew, with Goldson grabbing the ball.

The defender fed Sakala and he played Diallo who shot the ball beautifully into the net to seal the win.

After the mayor’s show

It was always going to be hard to follow after the raucous peak of victory over RB Leipzig on Thursday night.

For Rangers, it’s now all about the Europa League and Scottish Cup finals, with the title heading to Parkhead any day now.

And while Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men were utterly dominant, the midweek tempo and atmosphere was understandably lacking.

Fans still brought sombreros and beach balls to celebrate reaching the final and it was an impressive display but the day was flat compared to Thursday – but the majority of days at Ibrox will be too!

king for a day

Leon King received his first start from Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Calvin Bassey enjoyed a well-deserved rest.

The Rangers boss praised the teenager and, despite not being seriously tested, the stopper looked assured.

Neil McCann has compared the youngster to his former teammate Craig Moore in terms of stature and style.

King recently extended his contract at Rangers until the summer of 2024 and he certainly looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

And it was a good day for the Academy with Alex Lowry, just 24 hours after extending his contract, Adam Devine and Charlie McCann were all introduced in a second-half triple change.

He is Ghana be good

Tam Courts have done a brilliant job passing the youngsters through while challenging for a European spot.

And Ghanaian kid Mathew Anim Cudjoe showed why there was so much hype about him when he first started.

The youngster was unfazed by the big occasion and at just 18, he is the one who rightly excites the Arabs.

Cudjoe was comfortable on the ball and always looking to shake things up for the visitors.
