Arteta on Newcastle, rebounds, injuries | Press conference | News

Mikel Arteta faced the media on Saturday ahead of our Premier League clash with Newcastle United at St James’ Park on Monday night.

The boss was asked about the latest team news, bouncing back from the North London derby and the challenge posed by Eddie Howe’s side, among other topics.

Read on for a full transcript:

on which of our defenders are fit…
It’s a good question! We will probably know more tomorrow, so we wanted to extend this period as much as possible to understand how they recover, how they feel, evaluate them and tomorrow probably we will know more about how they are doing.

on which players he expects more news on…
Yes, Ben and Gabi.

on his reflection on the North London derby…
[I look] forward. I said after the press conference, I’m just looking forward, this game was lost, we were disappointed, but we didn’t have time to recover and we have a huge game to play on Monday against Newcastle and the focus and energy was right on that.

on Antonio Conte’s post-match comments…
I am fully focused on Newcastle.

on how we played against Tottenham…
We started the game extremely well, that we conceded the first goal and the way we conceded after that decision and obviously after the game we found ourselves in a difficult situation to judge or assess, but I have it said, I was really proud of the players, how they tried to handle the situation, but obviously very disappointed with the result.

on what he has learned from his players since the loss…
How lucky I am to have them, how resilient they are to all odds, how eager they are to play on Monday, how excited they are for the challenge ahead of them, because we all know everything we have been through throughout the season and how much we have to fight to be in this position.

if Thursday was the lowest moment of his career…
Thursday was another. Obviously losing a derby is always painful and after going through the situation we went through in the match, that’s how it is, but also, you probably learn a lot more than with any victory, so that’s good to go through these times sometimes.

on the confidence of the players at half mast since the defeat…
That it was a possibility and that we knew that in order to find ourselves in the position where we are today, a lot of things happened in the past and we lived it, we lived it and I hope that it may help us again on Monday .

on the reaction he expects to see from the players…
The excitement they showed me every day. The way they came in today with the energy they had today to play the game and very eager to go out there and play at the highest level.

on Newcastle’s progress since January…
Well you can see what Eddie and the coaching staff did. Right away they tried to change the way they played, they changed formation a couple of times, but after that they were pretty consistent and they changed the situation, I think, in a really good way, and they therefore have merit.

on the kind of atmosphere he expects at St James’ Park…
It’s the Premier League and it’s great to go outside and experience those moments. As an athlete you want to be exposed to that and take it the right way and feel lucky to be playing those kinds of games.

on how we might adapt to more injuries…
We will have to change some positions to try to make it work because we don’t have defenders anymore and even though we have academy players they haven’t experienced many of those positions because they are not centre-backs specified, so that’s something we’ll try to find a way to.

on the likelihood of White and Gabriel being fit…
I could [give you an estimate], but I’ll probably tell you anything! Tomorrow will be the day we get better answers, probably not the answers we want until game day, but hopefully better answers.
